I think I did well at STEEL SHOOTING tonight but apart from my arrogant report : ), I wanted to note that there were some fine BARETTA shooters tonight (note :this is VERY hard fo me to admit to). As a rule, I always have a prejudice - saying that any gun other than a 1911 or Glock (and just cause those Glockies are so persistant ^_-) can't seem to do well at 'racing'.

Tonight there were three Baretta shooters who competed/ran. One of which really put a LOT of time and $$$ into his Baretta firearm. He beat me a few weeks back and I haven't gotten over that so I had to challenge him tonight. It came to one last "tiebreaker" steel plate but I got it : ) so I can sleep soundly tonight.

At any rate this elite is very good and I give him props for really bonding with his weapon. The other two guys did well too, which gives me some faith in the US military's choice in 9mm fireamrs ; ).

One Baretta shooter of note has a LAZER SIGHT mounded on his grips, and it was a GREAT educational experience. A few weeks back this shooter did not have the lazer sighting system mounted on his Baretta, and IIRC he had mediocre performance (hope he isn't reading this ^_^;;) tonight tho he did absolutely splendind. I went against him and he did well, he also beat an experienced red dot scope racer.

After talking to him and handling his gun, I saw that it was sighted in properly. I think that the red dot sight was a good complement to the iron sight system. An experienced shooter using only iron sights and calm performance can do better, but the lazer system can be a vey nice accessory.

The main problem with relying on the lazer system is that any twitching or movement from the shooter will be exaggerated on the point of impact as you see that red lazer dot shaking back and forth.

A thorough lazer red dot shooter must first line up his sights, then LOOK OVER his sights, then find the dot on the target before the trigger can be pulled. This results in 3 separate conscious actions one's brain and body must go through in order to make a clean hit.

However, the pace of his hits when he was taking his time and not panicking told no lies.

I haven't tried the system to make a thorough anlysis but my theorem is this--- Against a shooter who relies on a fixed sight system (red dot scope or iron sights) and has their game down, and hits with every shot, a red dot LAZER sight is not faster (Assuming you go through the three steps needed to sight in a red laser dot. Not to be confused with a red dot scope that does not project a laser on the target.). However, against an unsure shooter, or a shooter that does not know where and how his sights line up to the point of impact, then the added degree of confidence of a Laser red dot is a definite boom.

Simply said. The main problem with relying SOLELY on a red dot laser sight without iron sights is that you have to 'hunt' for your sight downrange on your target. If you have iron sights, and have a good understanding of lining them up, it is good to have a second opition. Most people with only iron sights have to correct their sight picture by aiming higher and lower to compensate for distances to hit the small target (keep in mind the bulet hits differently at different distances for precise shooting), this means misses and correction. This is lost time. With a red lazer dot you have an instantaneous response/analysis as to where your bullet will hit if you do your part.

I hate to admit to it, but the field experiement tells no lies. A red dot laser sight system that projects a red dot on the target (that does not shoot back) is an advantage to a shooter who has their basics down.
