NATIONAL ANTHEM OF MACROSS

THE WORLD IS DIVIDED IN HALF BETWEEN those who love MACROSS 7 & the ones who will never forget MACROSS PLUS
I don't know exactly why, but it always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear this Yohko Kanno song. Instead of "Here comes the bride", T played this song when he got married. It was a beautiful day. To me it was the ultimate form of devotion between them.

At any rate I always think of that when I hear this song : )

T is a king out of men. XD

I've never really seen much of M7. I've only seen the movie, which was short but decent. How's the tv series?

And MPlus is gold, of course. :3 That and "Do you remember love?" are the pinnacles of the series.

T is indeed almost twice the badass I had previously taken him for. :) But then, I'm biased, since MPlus was one of the first animes I ever saw and I still think it's one of the best ones ever made.

Yoko Kanno owns the planet. XD

However, I haven't seen anything else Macross-related except for one ep of Robotech (I think), so I don't know if I'd like M7 better ^^;

bw, you should see "DyRL?". It's just one of those classics you have to see, and it's actually quite good despite the rather subpar tv series in my opinion. Nothing as intense as the MPlus rival complex, but it's still a good war story. With the power of song. :D

... though it's been tangled up in copyright disputes for so long now that it may never see a release, Japan or domestic. This is something that you'll have to find a pirated dvd of. ^^

But never, ever see Macross II. SO BAD. ><;

Yuu: I was just thinking about how I'd definitely heard of DYRL before, but I'd never actually seen a physical copy of it. That explains it...

I'll start looking around--maybe Animeniacs has it. :B Thanks~

Do you remember love is the movie that compressed the entire Macross TV series into a movie? FOKKER!!!!
Anyways if so then that, and Akira was when I realized I wanted to get into anime.

And Sam, yeah there ARE people who like Mac 7 more than Mac Plus - J you'll LOVE this.. one of the notorius offenders is EISU. I couldn't take him seriously for a while : B. Anyways I will buy the DVD for Mac plus this weekend : )

...I wonder if I have Macross the movie... I think i have the VHS at home (in Philippines) dare say both subbed and dubbed? I dunno if it was ever subbed.

Dudes, I am close to ignorant about the complexities of the Macross material. MPlus is pretty much all I know.

So what's Robotech--the same as the "Macross series"? And DYRL is this compressed into movie length, or is there a different "Macross movie" also? And what IS Mac7?? I'm guessing that there is no Mac1-6.

(If Eisu likes Mac7, does that mean that it's two hours of headrockingly awesome graphics with a plot so bad that it makes strong men cry?)

At least this doesn't seem to be as complicated as all the Gundam stuff. ^^;;;

FOKKEEEEERRRRRRR!!! XD

I've seen DyRL in fansubs, but that must be the only form since it's never had a home release.

And for bw, as for Macross series, theres...

Macross (original)
Southern Cross
... Return of the Bionoids? (I forget what it was called. It and SC are horrible though. ^^;)
Macross 2 (SO BAD!!!)
Macross Plus
Macross 7
Macross Zero (also pretty bad...)

Macross 7 uses the power of SONG!
... seriously, the people drive their planes by playing instruments from within the plane. ^^ It's hokey as hell, but they have good music. :D

As for "Robotech" vs. "Macross," it's become really weird in the states. Macross was originally dubbed Robotech for a US broadcast. HOWEVER, later Animeigo got their hands on the rights for only the dub, so now they have the dub labeled as "Robotech." ADV got the rights for the J-version and released a sub-only version called "Macross." And there you go. ^.^

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about "Robotech 3000." From wikipedia...

Robotech 3000 (2000, cancelled)

Main article: Robotech 3000

Carl Macek attempted another sequel with the development of Robotech 3000. This all-CGI series would have been set a millennium in the future of the Robotech universe and feature none of the old series' characters. In the three-minute trailer, an expedition is sent to check on a non-responsive mining outpost and is attacked by "infected" Veritech mecha. Again, the idea was abandoned midway into production after negative reception within the company, negative fan reactions at the FanimeCon anime convention in 2000, and financial difficulties within Netter Digital who was animating the show. It now exists only in trailer form on the official Robotech website.

And Andrew, Kel, Brannon, and I were all there booing the fuck out of it. Life was good back then. 8D

FOOKKKKKEEERRRR!!
8=X <-- skull leader smiley

T, being the definitive macross guru probably knows more but from what I understand, there was the original Macross Series.. Macek, who is infamous for his "chop shop" productions released ROBOTECH in the states by splicing Macross, Orguss (?) and one more series (they were all unrelated) dubbing over it and adding more plot elements on the fly. This shaped a generation >_<.

I think the Mac movie is essential along with Akira and Fist of the North Star movie.

I think Macek was also responsible for the Fist of the Northstar movie.. compressing the entire series into a dubbed feature (I have to check on that).

What I grew up with was a Macross movie that compressed the original series into a feaure length film. That was a staple of when I was young.

Mac 7 has good songs. Mac Zero also has a young FOOKKKKEEEERRRRR and that was the only reason I watched it (T went wild too - and yes I cried too when i saw him in young form)
: B I don't know why they called mac 7 - Mac 7 (maybe its a plot element? 7th colony or 7th squadron or what??).. I think this was when it got popular to add random numbers and letters to anime sequels (late 90s?) after Dragon Ball "Z" made it popular (in my opinion).

What's cool about Mac 7? It had MAXIMILLIAN JINUS as one of the main characters : ) and he is THE coolass in the original Macross.

Wow, thanks for all the information, guys. Despite having grown up on Transformers, Jem, etc., I seem to have totally missed out on most of the anime series that people consider "classic." :/

After watching that opening that Yuu posted...I...don't know how to react... o_o; Obviously, the quirkiness must have worked for and not against it, if a sizeable fanbase exists for it. But, like, wow.

Yuu: Why did RT3K suck? I would have thought that full-CG Macross would have been cool. Hell, it apparantly worked for GITS and Appleseed.

Snipe: So is Mac0 actually good, or is it only good because of that one character in kid form? But damn, if the Mac movie was formative to your childhood, then I HAVE to see it now...X0

I thought Mac Zero was so so.. it as nothing REVOLUTIONARY like Mac Plus
: ) (Rival Complex BANZAI!)

It was just basically FOOOKKKKEERRRR being in younger form that caught my eye and attention. Just that.

A far as Macross (HOORAY FOOOOOKKKKKEEERRRR HOORAY MAX JINUS!), I think it was what drew me to anime not exactly formative to my thought process.. but if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. DBZ, Macross, Akira and Fist of the North Star in my world are staples in any anime cocktail mingling.

Now if you'll excuse me I gotta get this MRB page done : )

That's EPIC, dude. Totally epic~ XD

Iirc, the (old) Fist of the North Star movie only went up to the first meeting with Raoh, sans the Toki arc with slight adjustments/deletions to other minor arcs (there's no general arc and the mountain dude arc is reduced to Raoh beating him up in one blow XD).

bw, that opening for M7 is honestly nothing. The sole 30 minute movie I watched is far, FAR more weird, including a GUITAR BATTLE, a semi-romance between the main dude and a 60-foot tall girl, and shots of the whole band playing in their planes (I think I lost it when I saw the drummer girl drumming in her cockpit :).

Jem! She's truly outrageous...
... but then there's the Misfits. Their songs are better. ;B

As horrible as that show is ("We saved world hunger!" 8D), I can't help but remember the song. ^^;

And as to why R3000 is so bad? Take a look for yourself. The quality of this movie is very poor, but I guess we booed Carl so damn hard that he wanted the hide the damn thing as best he could. Honestly, you'll probably be thankful that you couldn't see that much. 8D

http://www.robotech.com/gallery/mmitem.php?filetype=MOV&id=259

With "smart machines" and "ROBOTECHNOLOGY!" *gag* Seriously, not only was this show only using the name to sell a cheap cg show, but said show was horrible enough in itself. This trailer is a little different and doesn't have the flashing montage I saw at Fanime years ago, but up until then the crowd was stunned silent. I guess we wondered if it was some sort of elaborate joke at the time. Once the montage started up though, we shat on it, and shat hard we did. :D

Then we cheered a trailer for FLCL after that. As good a show FLCL is, I think we would have cheered anything at the time. :D

Dude, I didn't want to risk saying it at the time, but you took the words right out of my mouth. I was thinking, "Must resist...crossover fanfic urge...!!" XD XD

I thought you were actually collecting Jem a few years back.

I watched the M3K movie you linked to--overall, I think that if it had been better executed across the board (including better dialogue and a world design that would feel less dumbed-down, though maybe the whole thing was intended for a gradeschool audience or something :P), then maybe it would have been workable... But as it is, the best part was when the excavator with all the unnecessary limbs rose up behind the girl and she started screaming. For a second, I had hopes for mecha-Urotsukidoji. ;B

Marii Ijima? "Fluent in English?" I don't know about that. :P

I remember Zero was the one who linked the Jem intro at one point, and I was amused. It was like some kind of bizarre American magical-girl show that had a hokey theme song that I couldn't stop listening to. XD Nemuren, Kel, Fei, and I set out on a trip to video store bargin bins to find the damn thing, but I didn't actually find a tape until it got a vhs re-release. It's a HORRIBLE, horrible show, even for a (excuse my termanology, but I don't know what else to call it ^^;) "girly" show. However, Nemuren did say he wanted to make a dueling version of the theme song as an parody anime preview (possibly for FBBB2, but you didn't hear that from me) which pit the cast of Bubblegum Crisis 2041 as the good guys versus the cast of the 80's original as The Misfits. Pure genius. And the old BC's songs certainly were better. XD

Robotech tenticles... *shiver*

Honestly, I think people shat on it more because it was absolutely nothing like any Robotech at all. You had those horribly designed mechs, rampant AI monsters (what the hell was that?), and... a blue guy. @@; Otherwise, I guess it was no worse than any of the other all-cg cartoons on tv at the time, but Robotech is still considered an American classic. Changing it is like... raping Transfomers. :3
